Tumbleweeds
Tumbleweed, or Salsola Tragosa, is an annual plant that when dormant detaches at the stem and distributes its seeds when blown across the ground. Ingenious. They look cute from a distance but are covered with spines. Some minor first aid was required after this photo was taken.
I recall a solo driving in eastern Colorado decades ago as tumbleweeds blew across I70 in a stiff south wind. Timing it right I could run them over as they crossed the road, shattering the dry plants into a cloud of dust and chaff. It was great fun on an otherwise boring drive. They have been special to me ever since.
