Hippy Libertarians!
It takes a special kind of person to call Terlingua, Texas home. Its hot, dusty, and the closest grocery store is in Alpine, 80 miles to the north. These people like a lot of personal space. Quite a few have tattoos and long hair and drive beater cars. Folks I talked to care deeply about Big Bend National Park and the environment, but don't trust the government to manage it. They can't stand the border patrol, and have an affinity with small Mexican villages across the Rio Grande. They know thier neighbors - that is anyone living within thirty miles and would do anything for them. Tough, self sufficient, and accepting of anyone as long as you don't tell them what to do.
